What does it take to be a tech literate educator?

April 29th, 2007 · 2 Comments

Trying to some spring cleaning I ran across an article from The Journal (June 2005) titled 20 Technology Skills Every Educator Should Have. Here is a listing of the 20 skills:

  1. Word Processing Skills
  2. Spreadsheets Skills
  3. Database Skills
  4. Electronic Presentation Skills
  5. Web Navigation Skills
  6. Web Site Design Skills
  7. E-Mail Management Skills
  8. Digital Cameras
  9. Computer Network Knowledge Applicable to your School System
  10. File Management & Windows Explorer Skills
  11. Downloading Software From the Web (Knowledge including eBooks)
  12. Installing Computer Software onto a Computer System
  13. WebCT or Blackboard Teaching Skills
  14. Videoconferencing skills
  15. Computer-Related Storage Devices (Knowledge: disks, CDs, USB drives, zip disks, DVDs, etc.)
  16. Scanner Knowledge
  17. Knowledge of PDAs
  18. Deep Web Knowledge
  19. Educational Copyright Knowledge
  20. Computer Security Knowledge

At that point Web 2.0 was just infancy. Making a May 2007 edition what things would you add to the list but more importantly what would you take off the list.

You can find the resources from Friday afternoon’s workshops at the following places

Easy Grade Pro- The moodle site is located at http://sawit.cammad.net. Look for the moodle session labeled Easy Grade Pro. You can either log in as a guest or check in with me for a username and password.

Favorite Education Resources on the Web- It is on another page within the blog. Look for the link called FAV ED RESOURCES ON THE WEB at the top of the page. If you noticed I left something off my list please leave me a comment and I’ll do my best to add it to the list.

I will include the material from the session on PowerPoint when it becomes available.

Voicethread: Another 2.0 Tool

April 18th, 2007 · 1 Comment

On one of my many listservs I’m on I found the site Voicethread. Voicethread allows users to post a picture or a series of pictures and add commentary. At this point you may be saying what’s the difference between Voicethread and Bubbleshare? Voicethread allows others to add voice and/or text comments.

I haven’t seen the ability to embed items into a webpage like you can with Bubbleshare. Voicethread does open up other possibilities. If there was only 30 hours in a day to get everything done that I want to get done then we’d be on to something.

UPDATE:  I’ve just reviewed the tutorial that the site provides and you can embed the voicethread on your blog, website, or myspace page.  Too cool!  Here is one Alice Barr made about the storm we had this week.  Check it out here:  http://voicethread.com/view.php?b=1280

It’s Official: Presentation Piece Coming to Google

April 17th, 2007 · No Comments

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2007/04/were-expecting.html

One of the most expected announcements for the last year is the addition of Google Presentation.  Today Google made it official.  This summer Google is expecting to release the presentation piece to Docs and Spreadsheets.  This is definitely something my teachers will want to take advantage of in the fall.

This is what I call working smarter not working harder

April 6th, 2007 · No Comments

I really wish the people at Aquaminds would produce a PC version of NoteShare. Being a mac user I’m very happy but my school is PC based and I know that my teachers can become better teachers with a tool like this. I know there is OneNote from Micro$oft but a cross platform product would be even better!

Here is a video of how teachers and students can use this product to work smarter not harder. Enjoy Mac users and drool PC users.

Cybercompliments to hand out

April 6th, 2007 · 4 Comments

Last Friday was Stop Cyberbullying Day and Jennifer Wagner from Technospud.com thought it would be a good idea to follow it up with Cybercompliment Day. I didn’t participate last week for a variety of different reasons both work and personal reason but I felt compelled to participate today (besides I’m home today because there is no power at our school nor the in the town thanks to a freak snowstorm).

To me I’ve got a lot of cybercompliments to hand out concerning blogging. I’ve decided to break them up into clusters. So here we go…

  1. To David Warlick, Will Richardson, Miguel Guhlin, Wes Fryer, and Stephen Downes thank you for introducing me to such new topics through your blogs. You’ve been the best source of professional development over the last year and a half.
  2. To Bob Sprankle, Cheryl Oakes, Jennifer Wagner, Vicki Davis, Tim Lauer, Jeff Utecht for enriching what I do through your tales of the classroom integrating technology making what I do for my students and teachers better.
  3. To Kathy Sierra thank you for blending business principles, teaching, technology, and common sense with humor. You’ve inspired me to take the items you’ve written about and try to apply them to the my classes, students, and working with my fellow teachers. I know you’re on your sabbatical while your sorting things out but I just wanted to say thank you!
  4. To Alice Barr for forcing me to blog through her class which I’ve try to keep going (sometimes better than others).
  5. To Sharon Betts and David Trask for honoring me by linking my blog to yours.

There are so many good things going on thanks to blogging that we can take it for granted. Well today I’m not! Thank you for making a difference in my life through your work!
